Located in Calgary’s southeast, within the community of Seton, the South Health Campus is a state-of-the-art full-service hospital and healthcare facility administered by Alberta Health Services. The South Health Campus works to connect hospital care with community services.
The South Health Campus is one of twelve hospitals within the Calgary area and sits on a 44-acre area between the communities of Seton and Auburn Bay, making it roughly the same size as Chinook Centre shopping mall.
The construction of the South Health Campus began in 2007 and is the first health care project in Alberta to achieve the designation of a Gold Seal Managed Project it opened in 2011 and was fully completed in 2017. There are plans for the South Health Campus to apply for a LEED Silver Certification. This would make the South Health Campus the first greenfield, major tertiary health care facility in Canada.
The South Health Campus services Calgary and the surrounding areas as well as being the referral centre of Southern Alberta. For those looking to live and work in the south end of Calgary, there is quick access from the neighbourhoods of Auburn Bay, Mahogany and Cranston via Deerfoot Trail and Seton Boulevard.
The South Health Campus provides jobs for roughly 2,400 full-time equivalent staff and has approximately 180 physicians, 269 inpatient beds, 11 operating rooms and will serve 200,000 outpatient visits and perform 2,500 births every year. It also has a 24-hour emergency department, an intensive care unit (ICU) and day surgery units along with many other services.
Connecting healthcare and community services the Wellness Centre at the South Health Campus is home to many different programs and services and information to support them on their way to health and wellness and living a healthier lifestyle. The Wellness Centre is a partnership between YMCA Calgary and Alberta Health services and includes the Wellness Kitchen, a Resource and Knowledge Centre and a YMCA which is separate from the Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. The Wellness Centre includes a climbing wall with auto belay system and a weight room with a track. All the amenities on the South Health Campus Wellness Centre are available to serve the needs of Alberta Health Services staff, volunteers, patients and families, and the surrounding communities.
The Wellness Kitchen is more than your standard hospital cafeteria. It also provides a wide range of food and nutrition education classes where community members, patients families and staff can interact and learn more about healthy, mindful eating and good nutrition.
The South Health Campus is also conveniently located near many south Calgary retirement communities, hotels and the Seton retail district providing walking access to many restaurants and other amenities.
